«The Head of John the Baptist I-L» is a series of 50 lithographs in unique colour variants. The motif is taken from the Italian Baroque painter Guido Reni’s depiction of Salome with the Head of John the Baptist, painted 1630-1635.
The series is the result of an exploration of lithography as a printing medium. The Biblical prophet’s head on the platter has an iconic quality and recognizability that opens the work up for experimentation with colour combinations and different graphic effects.
Each variant is printed from up to 5 different lithographic stones. Each print is printed by hand and exists in only 1 copy.
The series is inspired by a chapter in René Girard’s book, The Scapegoat, published in 1982. In the chapter the author gives a profound analysis of the Biblical tale of the prophets beheading.
The series is a part of an overarching artistic exploration of Christian iconography and symbolism.
